FAQ

Here is a short summary of questions we get regularly. More detailed information can be found in the sections below.

  1. Who's the Admin/owner?
    • There's only one per server, and right now, I (hoorigan) am the only one on both of our servers.
  2. Who has access to the console?
    • hoorigan
    • Moderators have limited access to kick/ban/mute players, and nothing else. Moderators are, by all means, normal players, other than being allowed to yell at me (hoorigan) if they think I'm ruining things.
  3. When wip?
    • First Thursday of every month. We only run monthly servers right now.
  4. Do I keep my blueprints?
    • None of our servers have a blueprint wipe right now, and we do our best to work around "forced blueprint wipes" when we can. We will let you know if we lose your blueprints for some reason.
  5. I lost the $item blueprint. Can you give it back to me?
    • We have no way to do this, and even if we did, we can't prove you ever had the blueprint.
    • On rare occasions where the blueprint file might be corrupted in a more obvious way, we may recover everyone's blueprints by restoring from a backup. However, this cannot be promisesd.
  6. Does the Admin play here?
    • Check the server description for your server, as we will disclose it there. However, the short answer is, it shouldn't matter. If we're handling our servers honestly, an Admin playing with you should not effect your experience. If you trust us to be fair from the console, you should be able to trust us to be fair in the game. We understand there are a lot of badmins out there- that's part of why we started hosting our own servers in the first place. We aren't your ex.
  7. Why should I trust your staff not to abuse me?
    • We don't stand to gain by it. We're old- like, the old that a lot of people say is "too old to play games" kind of old. We want to use the time we have to enjoy the game with you, not to flex on you with admin power.
    • Because we only lose if we abuse you, we police each other the best we can, and we take abuse reports seriously. If you feel what we've done is abusive, we're happy to make corrections to how we operate.
  8. I was kicked/banned in combat. Isn't that abuse?
    • You were caught violating server rules in combat. That's abuse.
    • For transparency, this has happened exactly once on any of our servers over the past couple of years, because a player who was caught ESPing along with a friend he invited to the server was later caught aimbotting during a raid. It's in the FAQ because we feel that you should know our stance on this. We won't hesitate to act on rule violations just because you're in combat.
  9. Can you spawn in $item for me?
    • No. We wouldn't spawn it in for ourselves, and we won't spawn it in for you.
  10. Can you destroy $item or $building_block for me?
    • No. We wouldn't use admin power to do it for ourselves, and we won't do it for you.
  11. Will you trigger $event for me? I always miss it.
    • No. We wouldn't trigger an event for ourselves, and we won't do it for you.
  12. Will you skip or otherwise change the restart time for me?
    • No. We wouldn't do either of these for ourselves, and we won't do it for you. The time is subject to change, however, and additional restarts may be run in order to ensure that the server is up to date and running smoothly. But we will never skip or trigger a restart for our gameplay convenience, or for yours.
  13. I was offline raided overnight! It was you, wasn't it, Admin?
    • Probably not. If it was, it was done with no special power that a regular player doesn't have. Please reference the Rules for Us section below for more details.
  14. I shot at you, and you shot me back, and I died. Are you using Admin aim hacks?
    • None of us even know what that is. If it's a server mod, we don't have it, because it honestly sounds stupid, and would not help us to do our job any better. We don't need to modify the game to click on you.
  15. I feel as though I've been mistreated by staff. What can I do about it?
    • Talk to a staff member other than the one who you think abused you. We genuinely do keep each other in check, no matter the rank.

Rules for Us (Server Staff)

The rules for server staff establish what we consider to be "staff abuse," versus what we do not. The goal behind setting rules for staff is to ensure that players have a fun and fair experience on the server.

Only one (1) person may have access to server "Admin" status. Any other staff will act in a heavily restricted "Moderator" role. These roles will be more specifically defined below.

  1. The Admin has full access to RCON, but is expected to:
    1. Keep any unnecessary information hidden from view, in order to reduce the risk of what we describe as "forbidden knowledge" from spreading accidentally. Forbidden knowledge includes, but is not limited to:
      • Team information
      • Team chat
      • Player locations
      • Raw console output
      • Kill feeds
      • Events which are not announced by server announcements (i.e. Cargo Ship)
      • Player history which could give more information about who is in which team, which can not be obtained publicly
    2. Avoid, at all costs, spawning in anything which has functionality in gameplay. The only items which may be spawned are those which are 100% known to have no function. If an item or entity must be spawned for administrative duty, it must be destroyed afterwards.
    3. Reject all requests for:
      • Item replacement
      • Building block removal
      • Item removal (Doors, windows, walls, fences, etc.)
      • Vehicle spawning
    4. Avoid, unless absolutely necessary, appearing in-game in Admin (owner) mode. If your name is green, you're in Admin mode.
    5. If acting as Admin on a server where Player-Admins are allowed, an Admin is strictly forbidden from disclosing the location of, or raiding, any base which was found or explored while in Admin mode.
    6. On servers where server staff are permitted to play, the staff are expected to adhere to the Rules of Engagement provided in our internal documentation. From here forward, these players will be called "staff players." In summary, the rules of engagement are:
      1. The staff team may only raid in retaliation for having been raided.
      2. If a wrongful raid is conducted, the damage must be repaired, no items may be taken, and control of the base must be returned to its owner.
      3. The staff player may only engage in combat if a player initiates the fight, or is non-communicative when encountered. However, the staff team is permitted to retaliate if a player pretends to be friendly and then attacks or kills the staff player.
      4. Staff players are not permitted to grief on retaliation raids, beyond the level of griefing which was executed against them. If a staff player's base wasn't sealed or foundation wiped, the staff player may not seal or foundation wipe the target.

Who constitutes "staff" on the Rust servers?

This information will be updated as staff members or new servers are added. Server staff members are the people who have either full or limited access to RCON.

There are two categories of staff member on the Rust servers at the time of writing.

  1. Server Owner (@Rust Staff, NOT any other rank in Discord.)
    • As stated above, this is hoorigan#0512 on Discord. It's also in some of our announcements.
  2. Moderator (@Rust Staff, NOT any other rank in Discord.)
    • RBlink

Discord Staff (@Senior Administrator, @Administrator, @Moderator) do NOT have access to anything on the Rust servers if they do not have the @Rust Staff role. However, they can help to get someone from @Rust Staff if there's an emergency.

Rules for You (The Player)

  1. Don't cheat.
  2. Don't ask the Admin or Moderators to cheat for you.
  3. Don't violate Facepunch's Terms of Service.
  4. If you're asked to stop spamming chat, stop spamming chat.
  5. If you're asked to drop a conversation, drop the conversation.
  6. Keep "hate speech" out of our chat- try being creative with your insults and antagonistic behavior, instead.
  7. Do not stalk or harass players across servers.
  8. Don't follow, harass, stalk, or dox players/staff outside of the game. We take this very seriously, and will not hesitate to contact law enforcement.
